Energy Drinks
Energy drinks are more popular today than ever. This brightly colored bubbly drink promises to give you that boost of energy you need, but is the same drink that’s helping people get through the day potentially rotting your teeth? The answer is yes! We’ll explain below:
Keeping your teeth healthy is said to add extra years to your lifespan, drinking energy drinks can have a huge impact on your health. These drinks can wreak havoc on your teeth potentially causing decay but there are health risks for kids and adolescents who consume these beverages.
Tooth Decay
Most people know that sugar is a main ingredient in soda and energy drinks, but what’s not often given enough thought is the amount of acid these drinks contain. The high acidity levels in some of these drinks can cause the tooth enamel to erode. Without this protective layer it can make the tooth prone to sensitivity and decay.
Another ingredient in energy drinks is caffeine. In an article written by the American Academy of Pediatrics they give their recommendations on sports and energy drinks in adolescents. Marcie Beth Schneider, MD, FAAP, a member of the AAP Committee on Nutrition states “Some kids are drinking energy drinks – containing large amounts of caffeine – when their goal is simply to re-hydrate after exercise. This means they are ingesting large amounts of caffeine and other stimulants, which can be dangerous.” These drinks are being heavily marketed towards kids and young adults today and there is NO REASON why they should be consuming them.
