Charcoal Whitening: Is It Worth It?

A healthy charity is looking into the charcoal fad aimed at teeth whitening. It seems like just about everyone is trying to get their smile as white as can be, but does this at home remedy actually work?

“New research [sic] has also suggested there is no robust evidence which currently supports the claims made by many of these increasingly popular products in terms of tooth whitening and, importantly, some products may be actually harmful as they do not contain the effective ingredients to help prevent tooth decay.”

The charcoal may remove surface stains but the effects will not last despite what is currently being advertised. Furthermore, these substances don’t actually help to maintain the health of your teeth and can even damage enamel among other things. At the end of the day, your best option for healthy teeth whitening is still to receive a professional whitening service at your dentist.
